How a Chiropractor Can Help With Herniated Disks

Helping You Manage Your Neck and Back Pain

May 28, 2020

If you are suffering from a herniated disc, you know how painful the condition can be. From numbness to shooting pain, the damage to your spine can leave you feeling debilitated.

Fortunately, Dr. Beau Van Wechel of Pure Health Chiropractic and Wellness in Union, KY, can help you find a treatment for your herniated disc so that you can go back to performing the activities you enjoy, discomfort free.

What causes a herniated disc?

A herniated disc can have several causes, including a traumatic injury to the back or neck, strain from improperly lifting a heavy object, or age-related degeneration.

How do I know if I have a herniated disc?

If you are experiencing severe back or neck pain, your chiropractor will first perform an examination, looking at reflexes, pelvic balance, posture, and movement. It is important to share information about any injuries, ailments, or health conditions that you have experienced so that your chiropractor can determine the nature of your disc problem.

Your chiropractor at our Union office may also take an MRI or X-ray of your spine to verify the location of your herniated disc.

How will my chiropractor treat my herniated disc?

At our Union office, your chiropractors start with non-surgical treatment options. While a herniated disc may go away on its own, if it persists, your chiropractor may perform a spinal adjustment, use ice/heat therapies, or try techniques such as flexion-distraction or pelvic blocking.

With flexion-distraction, a special table is used to stretch and flex your spine to slide the herniated disc away from the nerve to relieve inflammation and discomfort. With pelvic blocking, your chiropractor will position a wedge-shaped cushion under your hips to allow for maneuvering of the pelvic area. The subsequent gravitational pull moves the disc off of the affected nerve.

If non-invasive treatments don't remedy your herniated disc, your chiropractor may suggest lumbar or cervical spine surgery.
