What Causes a Herniated Disc? What Should you do?

What Causes a Herniated Disc?

August 10, 2021

If you are dealing with back pain that shoots down your leg, you might have a herniated disc (also known as a ruptured or slipped disc). Without treatment, the condition can become worse and the pain intolerable. The skilled providers at Pure Health Chiropractic and Wellness provide treatment for herniated discs in the Union, KY, and Northern Kentucky areas.

What is a Herniated Disc?

There are discs all along the spinal column that protect the vertebrae and keep them from grinding or rubbing against one another. Inside each disc is a soft center that is surrounded by a hard, protective exterior. Discs can end up herniated when part of the soft center bulges out through a tear in the hard exterior. When the protruding disc presses against the nerves of the spine, it can feel like those nerves are pinched, which often leads to pain, weakness, or numbness in the back, legs, or arms.

Some signs that you might have a herniated disc include:

  • Muscle spasms
  • Muscle weakness
  • Overactive reflexes
  • A tingling or burning sensation
  • Pain in the back, legs, or arms

What Causes a Herniated Disc?

Several factors can cause a disc to become herniated. Engaging only the back muscles instead of the leg muscles when lifting large, heavy objects can result in a ruptured disc. Another cause of herniated discs is a condition known as degenerative disc disease. The condition can develop due to aging and wear and tear on the spinal discs. Sports injuries or back injuries due to accidents can also result in disc herniation.

Treatment for Herniated Discs

There are several ways to treat herniated discs. At our office serving the Union, KY, and Northern Kentucky areas, herniated discs can be treated through a combination of methods. Non-surgical treatments include rest, hot or cold compresses, medications, chiropractic techniques, stretching, strengthening exercises, and physical therapy. In some cases, surgery might be needed to correct the herniated disc. Our experienced and knowledgeable doctors can develop an individualized treatment plan tailored to your needs.

A herniated disc can be extremely painful and even debilitating, but help is available. For the treatment of a herniated disc in Union, KY, and Northern Kentucky, call Pure Health Chiropractic and Wellness at (859) 647-7780.
