How Does a Disc Become Herniated?

How Does a Disc Become Herniated?

January 15, 2018

Phrases like "slipped disc," "herniated disc," or "ruptured disc" are often used but misunderstood.

The medical professionals at Pure Health Chiropractic and Wellness in Union, KY, can help you understand what a herniated disc is and what to do about it.

Person In Pain

What is a herniated disc?

Vertebral discs are bodily shock absorbers sandwiched between vertebral bodies. Without discs, our spines could collapse. Discs are what prevents our vertebrae from grinding against each other and are essential for our motor functions.

According to the Union, KY Chiropractor at Pure Health Chiropractic and Wellness, disc disorders are classified into two categories: contained and noncontained discs. Contained discs are protruding in areas they shouldn't be but are intact. Noncontained discs are ruptured, and may also protrude, which means there are areas of the spine with leaking fluid causing other catastrophic issues.

What may cause a herniated disc?

Several things may lead to disc problems such as:

  • A traumatic injury can crush or misplace a disc
  • Excessive lifting at work or at home may force a disc out of position
  • Aging can lead to disc deterioration, usually referred to as degenerative disc disease

What are symptoms of a herniated disc?

With symptoms such as pain, numbness, or weakness in your legs, you need to inform yourself of the other symptoms according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery.

Lower back and neck issues vary in the following:

  • Back pain
  • Weakness in leg and/or foot
  • Tingling, pins-and-needles sensation, or numbness in the leg and/or foot, or in an arm
  • Weakness in one arm
  • Burning pain in the shoulders in neck, or arm

Dealing with a herniated disc can be painful and dangerous if you proper medical attention is not sought. For more information, call the medical professionals at Pure Health Chiropractic and Wellness in Union, KY.
